What is Affiliate Marketing?
Let’s start with the basic question everyone who wants to learn how to make money online has – what is affiliate? The other question is can I really make money promoting other people’s products? The answer to both is yes.
Affiliate marketing is when you promote and market other companies products and services on your blog, website or via email marketing, and you earn a commission when someone comes to your blog, clicks the link and buys the product.
How to Get Started with Affiliate Marketing?
If you want to get started in affiliate marketing, but are not too technologically savvy or just have no clue how to get started, then I suggest purchasing a good affiliate marketing training program, like AffiloBlueprint from Affilorama.
What I like about Affiloblueprint, is this is a 12 step video training course for beginners to intermediate experienced affiliate marketers, that walks you through the entire process of getting started in affiliate marketing and making money online, including:
- Finding a profitable niche for digital and physical products to promote on your blog.
- Choosing high value buyer keywords, which are the words people type into the search engine when looking for a product, or trying to find a solution to their problem. You want to find and target these keywords in the articles you write.
- How to set up your blog. You will have the option here of choosing the Affilorama sponsored web hosting product, or selecting your own self-hosted web hosting program. This will show you how to access WordPress. Most web hosting programs also have their own videos on how to do this, since some web hosting companies organize their CPanel a little bit differently, though they all work pretty much exactly the same.
- You will also learn how to create content, on-page and off-page SEO (search engine optimization, and how to drive traffic to your offers.
- The Affilorama website also offers tons of free content to learn about email marketing to help drive traffic to your offers.
- With AffiloBlueprint, you also get the Affilotheme affiliate marketing theme, which is designed specifically for affiliate marketers.
Please note, in addition to using AffiloBlueprint myself, I am also an Affilorama affiliate, so if you choose to purchase the program through my link, I may get paid a commission, but you will not pay any more for the product.
To get started with affiliate marketing, you first want to decide on a niche you want to promote on your blog. A niche is just a fancy word for the market segment you are targeting, such as health and fitness, online gaming, crafting, cooking, etc.
Choose a Name for Your Blog
Next, you want to choose the name for your blog or website, such as Learn Crafting and select a URL, such as www.learncrafting.com.
Ideally, you want to have a targeted keyword with several thousand monthly searches in your blog name.
A blog name with a high ranking popular keyword with many monthly searches in the H1 Title Tag, will rank faster than a blog with a less popular blog title.
Having a popular keyword in the H1 Title tag may also make it easier for the search engines to rank your blog, so it will not just show up in show up in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page) when people are searching for a topic related to your blog, it will be in the top 10 results.
You will select your blog name when you sign up for a web hosting account. You can choose other extensions for your URL, like .net, .org, .biz, in addition to the most popular “.com.”
Without having a keyword in the title, it may take longer for your blog is ranked on the first page for the keywords you want to rank for.
Have a Reliable Web Hosting Company Host your Blog
If you plan to make money with a blog, it is critical to have a reliable web hosting company, that has a 98% or higher up time, so you can be sure you won’t suffer downtime or other issues. If your blog is not up, you can’t make money from it.
You also want to have a web hosting company that is experienced in dealing with WP issues, so their tech support can quickly diagnose and resolve any issues that affect your blog’s performance.
I have used multiple web hosting companies over the years, and I am currently using Inmotion Hosting. They offer an affordable web hosting plan for beginners, and can support you and your web hosting needs as your business grows.
Now that you have chosen the name for your blog, you will more likely want to set up a WordPress Blog to begin promoting offers and writing content as an affiliate marketer. A blog is much more flexible for affiliate marketing than setting up a website.
What is a Self-Hosted Blog?
If you plan to make money with a blog, you need to have a self hosted blog, not a free blog, like Blogger, Weebly, etc. Affiliate marketing companies will not allow you to put affiliate links on a free blog.
This is usually outlined in terms and conditions agreement.
A self-hosted blog means you set up and have a paid web hosting account, and own the URL for your blog.
How to Monetize your blog?
Now that your blog is set up, you will want to monetize your blog with affiliate offers you have chosen, and this is how you make money with a blog.
There are several affiliate marketing companies that you can sign up with.
With these affiliate marketing companies, after you sign up as a Publisher, you can apply to the companies in your niche, and once you are approved, you put links and banners on your blog and in articles, and you are ready to start making money with a blog.
Once you sign up and are approved, you will be given a special unique link that identifies the traffic is coming from you.
You put the link on your blog as banners and in your articles that directs people to the product you are promoting. When someone clicks the link and buys the product, you get paid a commission.
The affiliate marketing companies such as:
to name just a few, usually have several to hundreds of companies in various niches that have signed up and are looking for affiliates just like you to promote their products and services on your blog.
In the case of Amazon.com, you can market the thousands of products they sell on your blog.
Many of the affiliate marketing advertisers offer free content and webinars to teach you the tips and tricks to market their products on your blog. Each company has an affiliate manager. Contact them. They are there to help make you a successful affiliate marketer.
Where Do You Get Content for your blog?
While most affiliate marketers write their own articles and product reviews, many affiliate marketing advertisers offer content for publishers to use, such as full length articles and email content you can cut and paste into your blog post or send your email subscription list.
If you choose you use this content, make sure at least 50% of the article is re-written in your own words, to prevent a duplicate content penalty from Google.
If you are not a good writer, you can go to article writing providers, and have articles written for you. You can expect to pay anywhere from $5 to $50 per article for a 300 to 500 word article.
How Long Will it Take to Make Money with Affiliate Marketing?
I think there is misconception that all it takes to make money with affiliate marketing is to create a blog, throw up some offers with links and images, then sit back and wait for the money to roll in.
That’s how it worked in the early days of the Internet, but those days are long gone. Affiliate marketing has evolved over the years, as search engines have evolved to weed out low quality spammy content.
Affiliate marketers must now create valuable content that helps users answer questions or solve the problems they are searching for, and adhere to stricter standards set by the search engines and the industry.
Realistically, it will take you anywhere from 30 to 90 days before the search engines even know you are there and will rank your blog and content, so it is searchable by readers.
Once readers can find your content, then you will start to make money. This is the lonely time of affiliate marketing, where you are creating content on a daily or weekly basis and you are not making any money. Eventually, you make your first sale, then a second sale, then several sales a day.
