How to Pick the Best Affiliate Programs to Monetize Your Blog?

Best Affiliate Offers

Once you get your blog up and running, if your goal is to make money online with your blog, you need to find relevant affiliate programs to promote on your blog.

To promote most affiliate programs, you will need to have a self-hosted blog. The self hosted version of WordPress is WordPress.org, which you get with a web hosting plan.  You will also need to purchase a URL for you new blog.

Affiliate networks will generally not allow you to promote their offers with a free blog, such as Blogger or WordPress.com. Amazon.com affiliate is the exception, and does allow their affiliates to promote offer on Blogger.com, which is a free blog.

How to Find Affiliate Programs

No matter what your niche is, there is most likely an affiliate network you can sign up.  Just do an internet search for [product + affiliate].

This will return a list of companies in your niche that have an affiliate program.  The next step is to click the links of each of the programs and apply to become an affiliate.

You should only apply to affiliate programs in your niche.  If you apply to affiliate programs outside of your niche, you run the risk of confusing your readers thus causing them to click away.

If you have a home improvement blog, you wouldn’t want to promote a knitting offer, even if you love knitting. Your readers are looking for tips on home improvement, and unfortunately knitting would not be a good fit for a home improvement blog.  This can also negatively impact your bounce rate, as readers will most likely quickly click away.

You also run the risk of being denied by the affiliate network, if your blog is in an unrelated market.

how to find affiliate programs

You can go to the website of a product you want to promote that is in your niche, and look on the website for words: affiliate or promote.  This will most likely indicate they have an affiliate program.  Some companies use an affiliate network to manage their affiliate program, and others have their own in-house affiliate program.

If yes, click the button and apply for the program.  It can take anywhere from a day to a few weeks to get approved as an affiliate.

Don’t Forget Amazon.com

For most affiliate marketers, Amazon.com is usually the first affiliate network they apply to.  Under the section “Make Money with Us,” you will see ‘Become an Affiliate.’  Just click the link, fill out and submit the application.

All that is needed to promote Amazon products, is a URL and a website or blog.

Once the affiliate team reviews your website, as long as there is no profanity or nudity, and does not promote drugs, violence, sex or hate you will most likely be approved.

In some cases you may have to do  bit of searching to find the link on the website to apply for the affiliate program.

Did you know Target Stores has an affiliate program?  You might not have, since it is not readily apparent on the website.  You have to select “More” at the bottom of the website.  This will bring up a list of internal pages.

Affiliates is toward the bottom of the list. Click and apply for the affiliate program.  If you type in Target affiliates in the search bar of your search engine, you will see a link to apply for the Target Affiliate Program at affiliates.target.com.

  1. Hello Ken,
Thank you for such an informative and productive series of articles. I was searching for some guides on affiliate marketing startup and engine led me here. Your writings speak loud about the strong grip you have over your niche. Hope you do not mind but i would like to ask you about something relevant to one of the element that got discussed in this article. I am a blogger myself and it’s been over an year that i got fully engaged with my contents and built nice followings and traffic that helped me a lot earn a little through adsense but the thing is it’s not cutting it. It crossed my mind many times about introducing my webs to affiliate marketing but i was waiting for right moment, and now when i have the traffic built up and trusted following, i feel like i should start promoting products related my niches now. But finding the products of different niches in one place/platform or even getting approved in a program that might just refuse the starters is hard. I’ve been searching on my own and found this revglue program here in UK that is offering those kinda services and stores data with free CMS tools and 100% commission on sales which caught my eye and i feel like i should try joining them but that would be nice to gain some advise from some professionals on this. revglue.com/free-wordpress-plugins any suggestions or recommendations are welcomed.
    Thank you in advance
